ICTP: Use travel to strengthen East Asian Community and look to a Green Growth future

Lipman said that with 3 Heads of State Summits in 2015 – on development financing, sustainable development goals, and the critical Paris Carbon Agreement in December – the world would progressively shift to a long-term Green Growth trajectory. He noted that the ASEAN States all have Green Growth strategies, and they could make this a key strategic EAC leadership goal.

At the same time there was a widespread recognition that Travel and Tourism is a massive socio-economic driver, both as an intra-EAC integration catalyst and an extra EAC trade dimension. He urged the Member States to make this a strategic priority.

Finally, Lipman referred to the long-standing work of the WEF in the region to promote a single e-visa protocol based on the tried and tested Australian model, noting that with electronic payments and increasing database scrutiny it would streamline formalities, eliminate unnecessary physical blockages in the system, and strengthen security.

ICTP is a grassroots travel and tourism coalition of global destinations committed to quality service and green growth. ICTP engages communities and their stakeholders to share quality and green opportunities including tools and resources, access to funding, education, and marketing support. The coalition advocates sustainable aviation growth, streamlined travel formalities, fair coherent taxation, and investments for jobs. ICTP supports the UN Millennium Development Goals, the UN World Tourism Organization"s Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, and a range of programs that underpin them.
