Tehran exhibition showcases today’s Vietnam

The Vietnamese culture and traditions have been brought closer to Iranian people at a week-long exhibition entitled “Vietnam of Today” which opened in Tehran on May 24.

Jointly held by Vietnamese Embassy in Iran and the Islamic Culture and Relations Organisation (ICRO), the exhibition has been arranged to commemorate the 125 th birthday of the late President Ho Chi Minh and 40 years of the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Iran.

In his opening remark at the event, Vietnamese Ambassador to Iran Nguyen Hong Thach said that friendship relations between Vietnam and Iran have been growing in the past years and he hopes the exhibition will give fresh impetus to other cultural exchanges between two countries.

Meanwhile, a representative from the Art and Cultural Organisation of Tehran Municipality said that cultural linkage via activities such as the on-going exhibition, creates precious opportunities for people of the two nations to learn about each other’s culture.

On the occasion, the Vietnamese Embassy in Iran and the tourism development company under the Iranian Cultural Heritage Handicrafts and Tourism Organisation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on promoting tourism collaboration.

Ethnology Museum ready for Children’s Day

The Museum of Ethnology is offering games for children from around the world in honour of International Children’s Day on June 1.

Children can play games from various countries such as the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia and Nepal. They can also try on traditional clothes worn in those countries.

Craftsmen will also demonstrate how to make toys from bamboo, including puppets with swords, swinging puppets, fish, pin wheels and bamboo phones.

Established in 1997, the Museum of Ethnology has served as a research centre and public museum with a mission to collect, document, preserve and exhibit the cultural heritages of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups.

It houses over 29,000 exhibits, including approximately 25,000 objects related to Vietnam’s ethnic minorities and their cultures.

Buddhist exhibition opens in HCM City pagoda

Nearly 400 objects and pictures from important Buddhist events held over the past 50 years are being showcased at the Vietnam Quoc Tu Pagoda to welcome Buddha’s 2,559th Birthday.

The highlight of the display, which opened on May 24, is a section of exhibits about the persecution of Buddhists in 1963 by the US-backed Saigon Government of Ngo Dinh Diem. Images remembering the struggle and the autograph of Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc, who famously set himself on fire to protest against the repression, are on show.

In addition, Buddhist scriptures, books, prayer beads and art work are on public view across 20 display areas.

The exhibition aims to look back on the life and teachings of Buddha and the achievements enjoyed by the religion in Vietnam over the last half century.

The event will run until June 2.

To celebrate the occasion, the organising board will offer free vegetarian lunches for followers and residents visiting Quoc Tu Pagoda.

King of Balladeers to perform

American R&B and soul singer-songwriter Peabo Bryson will visit Vietnam in September to perform in the musical show In The Spotlight.

The My Thanh Entertainment and Advertising Company said Bryson’s repertoire would feature his hits, including the soundtracks for Beauty and the Beast and a Whole New World.

The singer will also perform the songs Tonight I Celebrate My Love, and If Ever You’re in My Arms Again, which were popular in the US in 1984.

Born in 1951 in Greenville, South Carolina, the two-time Grammy Award-winner has released 21 albums.

New York Times music critic Jon Pareles called Bryson the “Pavarotti of Soul Singers”. His duets with Natalie Cole – What You Won’t Do for Love and Roberta Flack – Tonight, I Celebrate My Love, a Top 15 pop smash – had earned Bryson the tag “King of Balladeers”.

Bryson won his first Grammy Award for Beauty and the Beast in 1991 with international pop singer Celine Dion. It became a number one pop hit. The next year, he bagged another Grammy for A Whole New World from Aladdin which he performed with Regina Belle. Both Beauty and the Beast (1991) and A Whole New World won Oscars for “Best Song”.

In The Spotlight will be held in Hanoi on September 12 at the National Convention Centre, and in Ho Chi Minh City on September 18 at the Hoa Binh Theatre.

Veteran singers travel far to spread revolutionary music

Singers who perform songs about love of country do not think about money and glory, but only their passion for revolutionary music and the pleasure it gives them and others.

Singers Quynh Lien and Quynh Hop of HCM City, for example, have found ways to win the hearts of music lovers, both old and young, particularly fans in remote areas.

After more than 40 years in music, Meritorious Artist Lien has travelled to remote provinces and islands, including Truong Sa (Spratly), to perform revolutionary songs in praise of the country and soldiers.

“I love singing to people in remote areas and to soldiers, who, with their love for revolutionary music, deepen my passion about the music and help me feel free during performances,” Lien says.

Born in Hai Phong, Lien began her career in 1972 when she was 16. Living during wartime, she fell in love with revolutionary music.

After five years of singing for local traditional music troupes, Lien began to work for by People’s Artist Le Doa, former head of the Viet Nam Border Guard Art troupe.

She studied with music professors Mai Khanh and Trung Kien, and People’s Artist Thuy Huyen.

“To sing perfectly, I have worked hard to improve my vocal skills.

I volunteered to perform for soldiers stationed in border areas and islands, where I learned that music has a special power.”

Her favourite songs include Chao Anh Giai Phong Quan (Hello Liberation Army Soldiers), Bai Ca Tinh Ban (Song of Friendship) and Thoi Hoa Do (The Time of the Red Flowers), written by famous composers Hoang Van and Nguyen Dinh Bang.

These songs helped Lien win the golden prize at national music and song contests in 1985, 1987 and 1990.

Audiences have been won over by Lien’s performances of many folk songs like Noi Lua Len Em (Setting Fire) by Huy Du.

In the works, her voice is strong and passionate. Talented singers like Quang Tho and Thu Hien are fond of her vocal skills.

“After listening to Lien, I feel the sand, wind and sunshine of islands, where our brave soldiers are working to protect the country,” said Tran Van Dau, who lives in a remote district of Thanh Hoa Province.

Like many of Lien’s fans, Dau enjoys listening to her voice on Viet Nam Radio.

“Lien understands soldiers’ work and lifestyle. She tells a story to them through her singing,” he said.

Younger than Lien, singer and composer Hop has produced 57 albums of 600 songs, mostly about the country, soldiers and President Ho Chi Minh.

Two of her highlighted albums are Bien Dao (Vietnamese Islands) and Nguoi Linh Bien (Navy Soldiers), both featuring Truong Sa soldiers and performed by Hop and young singers of HCM City.

“I found myself by singing and composing songs in praise of Truong Sa soldiers. My albums on the theme have attracted many young people and teenagers, who often enjoy love songs,” said Hop, who is a graduate of the Ha Noi Music Conservatory and Army College of Arts.

“I believe that revolutionary music will be young forever. The music and its singers and composers can evoke a love for the country and its heroic history among young generations,” she said.

Hop’s latest album, To Quoc Nhin Tu Bien (The Country Seen from the Sea), was released last month.

“My love for revolutionary music keeps my soul wealthy,” said the 56-year-old.

Plays for youth mark int’l holiday

Tehran exhibition showcases today’s Vietnam, King of Balladeers to perform, Plays for youth mark int

Artists from the Tuoi Tre (Youth) Theatre in Ha Noi will stage the play De Men Phieu Luu Ky (The Adventures of a Cricket) to entertain the children and young audiences this Sunday on the occasion of International Children’s Day (June 1).

The 70-minute play The Adventures of a Cricket is directed by Bui Nhu Lai and adapted from the children’s book of the same-name by well-known writer To Hoai. The work reflects the interesting adventures and life of the crickets as well as the interactions with the insect world around them. They are brave enough to overcome difficulties in their struggle and dreams of peace and justice.

The characters also take on a richer more symbolic meaning and are widely viewed as representing the youth of Viet Nam and further embody their feelings and thoughts on the revolution, and portray their dreams of a stateless and classless world.

The play aims to provide interesting lessons on humanity for children and older audiences.

The book, written in 1941 for children, has been translated into English, French and Italian.

During a rehearsal last Wednesday, 800 children crammed into the theatre to enjoy the spectacle.

According to artist Nhu Lai, this is the second time the insect world from the famous book has been adapted for theatre and staged by artists from the Youth Theatre.

They staged the play for the first time 20 years ago.

“This is a story for different generations, not just children. Writer To Hoai managed to tell the story of the countryside to describe a society which is still true. It is full of laughter and useful lessons,” said Lai.

“Several generations has grown up with children’s stories and folk songs. I think that it’s the artists’ task to tell the story for younger generations. I hope this play will make young readers interested in children’s stories again,” he added.

The artists have been faithful to the content of the book but use a contemporary storytelling style which is more suited to modern life. To make the play more entertaining, several funny dances and songs are included including Con Buom Xinh (Beautiful Butterfly) and Gangnam Style. The theatre was overwhelmed with laughter and applause during the rehearsal.

“I am very happy the book my father wrote is being staged by the Youth Theatre again. Now the life of the crickets will be more exciting. However, I regret that the artists are unable to act naturally on stage,” said Nguyen Phuong Vu, a son of writer To Hoai.

Ten years ago, this well known children’s book was also adapted into a 12-part puppet drama for Viet Nam Television.

Road safety taught using art in schools

More than 200 student drawings about road safety line the walls of Nguyen Trong Tuyen Primary School in Binh Thanh District. The drawings are part of a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the need to wear a helmet while riding a motorbike.

Nguyen Duc Quan, a teacher at the school, said the drawings had been beneficial.

“All of my school’s students now wear helmets,” she said.

Many schools in HCM City also use art to teach students about road safety.

Le Nguyen Ngoc Linh, a fifth grader at Quoi Xuan Primary School in District 12, said she and other students won first prize in a drawing contest on road safety regulations.

They submitted their drawing to a contest orgainsed by Helmets for Kids, a programme run by the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation and sponsored by the UPS Foundation.

Nearly 60 per cent of children in Viet Nam face a high risk of injury from traffic accidents because they do not wear a helmet, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Last year, at least 50,000 people experienced brain injuries caused by traffic accidents, according to a report from the National Safety Committee. Of those, 13.4 per cent were children. Half of that number were not wearing helmets.

After the report was issued, the government released Decree No 171 last year. It requires children aged 6 and below to wear a helmet.

Many schools though-out the country have carried out road-safety regulation programmes, and the National Traffic Safety Committee also has periodic enforcement campaigns on the need to wear a helmet.

The results of the latest campaign showed that the number of children wearing helmets rose to 68 per cent in Ha Noi, Da Nang and HCM City in April against 38 per cent last March, according to surveys from the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation.

Picture book released for Children’s Day

A book collection that debuted in HCM City on Sunday to celebrate Children’s Day on June 1, as well as other newly published children’s books, are now available in bookstores around the country.

The book collection, Tuyen Chon Nhung Cau Chuyen Hay Nhat Danh Cho Thieu Nhi (The Best Stories for Children), includes five books written by both veteran and young authors such as Nguyen Thi Thanh Binh, Nguyen Ngoc Hoai Nam and Vo Thu Huong.

The books feature lively pictures by young artists Thuy Dung and Tien Thong.

The works, for children between six and 10 years old, include stories of friendship, love and dreams, written with the authors’ typical flair and imagination.

More than 5,000 copies of each book have been printed by the HCM City General Publishing House and First News-Tri Viet, which signed a copyright deal with the authors to republish their books.

Kim Dong Publishing House, a well-known publisher for Vietnamese children, has also released a series of books for children and teenagers written by both Vietnamese and foreigners.

One of its featured books is Thoi Gian Tron O Dau (Where Does the Time Go?), a collection of poems by Nguyen Thai Duong.

The 145-page book features 78 works of childhood, friendship, and love of country, school and family. It also includes 78 beautiful pictures created by artists Cao Tuan and Dieu Quoc Viet.

“I can improve my work by writing for children,” said teacher and poet Duong, who has spent 40 years writing for newspapers and magazines for children and teenagers such as Rua Vang (Golden Turtle), Nhi Dong (Children) and Muc Tim (Purple Ink).

“My book is a gift for children on Children’s Day,” said the 62-year-old writer.

More than 50 Vietnamese children’s books in literature, history and arts published by the Kim Dong are available for reading at the website .

The website includes information about the books, including the publishing date, number of pages, prizes and shops that sell the books.

For summer, Kim Dong plans to increase the number of books on the website and improve the website’s design to make it more appealing to children.

The Hamlet project is coming to Saigon

VietNamNet Bridge – June will see auditions in Saigon for Vietnamese actors and dancers wanting to take part in a project to stage a wordless version of Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet”. The project originates in New York and aims to promote Vietnam/ U.S. artistic cooperation.

Six American coordinators will be arriving in Saigon – a director, a film-maker, a lighting expert and so on – and they will be looking for eight Vietnamese to perform the drama. The successful eight will be paid, and auditions to find these eight performers will be free of charge.

Shakespeare’s famous play is well-known in Vietnam, say the organizers, but, because the language is difficult, performances are rare and probably under-appreciated. A version consisting of mime, dance and visual images, by contrast, should be easily understood by all.

Auditions will take place at Dancenter, 53 Nguyen Dang Giai Street, Thao Dien, District 2, Saigon on June 12, for actors, and June 13 and 14 for dancers.

Dancers and actors who want to apply should send a resume and a headshot to vietnamproject2015@gmail.com by June 10, 2015.

The eventual performances will take place on three weekends, Thursday to Sunday nights, from July 23 to August 9. The group hopes that a thousand people will see these performances.

Rehearsals will be held every weeknight between June 17 and July 23.

“We are adapting “Hamlet” because it is one of the most universal stories in history. Hamlet’s emotional and psychological journey is so innately human that it has the ability to surpass all cultural and linguistic barriers,” writes the director, Daniel Croix Henderson, in the Project Overview.

A documentary film will be made of the rehearsal process and the performances. This will be screened by international arts organizations in New York City and in upstate New York, and will also be submitted to film festivals across the United States. It is hoped the film will encourage discussion on the current social, political, and cultural relationship between Vietnam and the U0S.

“Our adaption of Hamlet will be 90 minutes long without an intermission,” continues the Project Overview. “It will flow like a lucid dream, or a moving painting, with few black-outs and no clunky transitions. Props, setting and costumes will be minimal.”

The environments will be largely created by lighting and sound, plus the physical expression of the performers. There will be no spoken words.

Daniel Croix Henderson is a director and actor originally from Buffalo, NY. As a theater artist, he aims to produce world-class professional work with an emphasis on cultural and artistic diversity. He has worked on over 40 theatrical productions, commercials, and films, and has appeared on stage with regional theater companies across upstate New York such as Shakespeare in Delaware Park, New Phoenix Theater, and Torn Space Theater. He has directed for Subversive Theater Collective and at Rust Belt in Buffalo, NY.

All in all, The Hamlet Project appears set to be a major artistic event in Saigon. In particular, the actors and dancers taking part will have a unique cross-cultural experience, and be paid for participating into the bargain.

Symphonic poem to be narrated, acted out for kids

VietNamNet Bridge – The Viet Nam National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO) will perform the symphonic poem Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks on Sunday in Ha Noi.

The concert is being held by the VNSO and the Goethe Institute for youth and their parents on the occasion of International Children’s Day. The VNSO first played the piece in March.

“This is a very old German story from more than 500 years ago,” said conductor Tetsuji Honna. “This time we will show and explain in more detail, scene by scene, helping small children to understand and enjoy the musical work.”

It is one of composer Richard Strauss’ most popular symphonic poems. It’s told about Till Eulenspiegel, a single-movement orchestral work.

Strauss composed the piece between 1894 and 1895 based on a German folk tale from the 14th century.

Till Eulenspiegel is famous for never taking himself or his fellows too seriously. He looks at life from a humorous point of view.

The stories of Till Eulenspiegel will be told and acted out by actor Nhu Lai, with musical accompaniment by the orchestra.

Once the stage is properly set and the hero is identified, the listeners will follow Till’s tales of social destruction as he frustrates workers, pastors and intellectuals alike.

“I’m a little bit nervous because this is the first time I have performed with an orchestra,” Lai said. “However, it is an interesting experience for my job.”

Nhu Lai also wrote the Vietnamese narration after he read the Vietnamese version of Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks provided by the Goethe Institute.

A projector will show illustrations by Doan Bang, who also designed the show’s set. The only set piece is a wagon, which will follow the narrator throughout the performance.

Children who come to the concert are welcome to try conducting the orchestra. They and their parents will have a chance to learn all sorts of interesting facts about the different instruments.

The concert will start at 8pm on Sunday at the Viet Nam National Academy of Music, 77 Hao Nam Street.

10 Months 10 Docs project honours young filmmakers

VietNamNet Bridge – Three outstanding short documentaries made by young Vietnamese filmmakers were screened yesterday evening (May 27) in Ha Noi, as part of the closing ceremony of the 10 Months 10 Docs project.

Ha Noi, young filmmakers, audience, domestic violence

Young filmmakers participating in the 10 Months, 10 Docs project take photos at the closing ceremony of the project, with representatives from the American embassy and the Vietnamese filmmakers who trained them. Photo courtesy: US embassy in Viet Nam.

The project was carried out by the Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents (TPD), and sponsored by the United States embassy in Viet Nam.

“Tonight’s event honours Vietnamese talents. Making a film is like telling a story. I am glad that the young filmmakers here succeeded in telling the stories that interest many Vietnamese people. It’s interesting when the world outside can also know more about contemporary life in Vietnam,” US Ambassador Ted Osius said at the closing ceremony of the project.

The three films talk about contemporary society in Viet Nam.

The films are Nha Doi Dien (The Opposite House) featuring the love of the two gay men; Me con Ha (Mother and Daughter) depicting domestic violence; and Vi Sao Binh Khong Cuoi Chong (Why has not Binh been married?) that tells the story of a single woman who daily faces pressure to get married from her family and neighbours.

The project, which aimed to teach documentary filmmaking to young Vietnamese students, ran for 10 months from February 2014 to April 2015. Ten short documentary films were made during this period. They featured contemporary life in Viet Nam, with social issues such as gender equality, LGBT community (homosexuality), women and child rights.

“I believe the art is to pose questions, and not give the answers. With this project, we want to give young people a chance to pose all questions about the society around them and to speak about those social issues with other people,” film director and TPD Director Bui Thac Chuyen said.

The project received US$20,000 from the American embassy. Before shooting their films, the young filmmakers involved in the project did a short filmmaking course with Mark Jonathan Harris, three-time Oscar-winning American documentary filmmaker, award-winning children’s novelist, and a Distinguished Professor in the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.

They also took part in a seminar about sound techniques with French sound expert Arnold Soulier, and received guidance from several Vietnamese experimental filmmakers. They also had the opportunity to attend short courses that equipped them with knowledge about modern social matters, as well as skills needed to present a documentary filmmaking project.

The other seven documentary films made during the project will be shown (with English subtitles) at the TPD office (see listing on P22).

Filmmakers and the actors of the film will interact with the audience about the filmmaking process and the stories around the film.

TPD has trained several outstanding Vietnamese filmmakers. Over the last few years, it has held several free documentary filmmaking classes for interested young people.

HCM City celebrates Vesak with giant lotus models

The Institute of the Buddha of Mercy on Monday night hosted a ceremony to light up seven golden lotus lanterns to mark the Vesak (the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death) on Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal in HCMC’s District 3.

Seven golden lotuses represent the seven steps taken by Prince Siddhartha Gautama shortly after birth. The presence of these brightly lit giant flower models helped beautify the city.

At the event, monks both prayed and held small lotus lights in their hands to go along the canal under the bright sky of fireworks display. Prior to the release of flower lanterns, monks also carried out a rite to offer aloe wood to pay tribute to the Buddha with the participation of 500 Buddhists of the Institute of the Buddha of Mercy. This was the third time, the institute had held the annual ceremony to mark the Vesak on Nhieu Loc canal.

Veteran author’s children’s books reissued

The Kim Dong Publishing House has republished a collection of 11 books for children written by late author Doan Gioi, one of the country’s most talented contemporary writers.

The collection includes Dat Rung Phuong Nam (The Southern Woodland), a novel which highlights the culture and lifestyle of southern people.

The book has been translated and published in Russia, Cuba, China and Germany. It was also made into an 11-part TV series produced by the HCM City Television in 1997.

Born in 1925 in Tien Giang Province, Gioi worked for several radios, newspapers and publishers. He wrote many short stories, novels and poems.

For his contributions, the HCM City People’s Committee decided to name a street in Tan Phu District after his name after his death in 1989.

The performances combine traditional genres of circus and puppetry as well as modern music and dance.

“We have invested in theatre costumes and sound and light effects to dazzle young audiences,” said the troupe’s director Tran Loc.

Loc said the managing board had worked with local and foreign tourist agencies to introduce their art to visitors. They have also co-operated with many schools to offer free shows for students.

Exhibition at Manzi features surrealism

Tomorrow Manzi Art Space will present Stories Told in an Oriental Way, a solo exhibition by visual artist Do Tuan Anh.

The exhibition features Tuan Anh’s latest surreal paintings, which were created in 2015, two years after his settlement in Solingen, a small city in Germany.

In his previous work, the countryside dominated his perceptions and approach to art. Having to relocate to Germany in 2013 meant the artist had been uprooted from his source of inspiration, leaving him in an in-between state. He’s neither here nor there. And this uncertainty is reflected in his show.

The exhibition is open until June 20 at 14 Phan Huy Ich Street.

French movies to be shown in TPD, L’Espace

The Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents (TPD) will screen the French movie Amelie tomorrow.

The 2001 romantic comedy Amelie (Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amelie Poulain) is a whimsical depiction of contemporary Parisian life set in Montmatre. It tells the story of a shy waitress, played by Audrey Tautou, who decides to change the lives of those around her for the better, while struggling with her own isolation.

When it was released in the US the movie made US$33 million, making it the highest-grossing French-language film ever released in the US.

The screening will start at 7.30pm at 51 Tran Hung Dao Street (level 4). Entry costs VND20,000.

On the same day, L’Espace will present the movie 8 Times up (8 Fois Debout) at 8pm.

TeleCineObs, a publication that critiques movies, said about 8 Times up: “The romantic and melancholy film from young writer Xabi Molia does not hesitate to tackle the most implacable standards of our world.”

The movie will be presented in its original French with Vietnamese subtitles. Tickets cost VND50,000. For members of L’Espace and students they’re VND40,000.

Hibiya Line, Nic Ford and Dan Lo will bring afro beat, disco, house and techno to the show on Saturday. The last show will feature groovy tunes by DJ El Captain.

All music nights start at 10pm at 5 Nguyen Tat Thanh Street in District 4.

Admission is free for the first and final shows. Entrance is VND100,000 after midnight for the other two shows.

Persian literature – potential bridge for Vietnam-Iran cultural ties

The role of the Persian literature in expanding the cultural and diplomatic ties between Iran and Vietnam was discussed at a seminar held in Hanoi on May 27 by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) and the Iranian Embassy in Vietnam.

Iranian Ambassador Alvandi Behineh said that Iran and Vietnam set up their diplomatic ties in 1973, but their potential for cooperation has yet to be tapped fully.

Mutual understanding of each other’s language and literature is useful to develop cooperation in culture and boost the exchange between intellectuals and peoples, he added.

According to VASS Vice President Pham Van Duc, the bilateral cultural and literature ties have recorded positive developments. Previously Persian literature was translated into Vietnamese through a third language, but the country now has some translators who work directly in Persian.

Some major Persian works have been published in Vietnam recently, including a collection of ancient Persian poems published in 2011 and a collection of Persian fable poems published in 2012. Works by the great poet Saadi Shirazi have also been introduced to Vietnamese literary researchers on the special issue of the Literature Research Magazine in March this year.

Vietnamese student wins first prize at major European contest

Sinh Vien Vietnam magazine and a delegation of the European Union in Vietnam on May 26 hosted the closing ceremony and awarded prizes to the winners of a writing competition in Hanoi.

With a good composition and a short film about the EU produced by herself, Le Chau Bao Ngoc, a third-year student at HCM City University of Cinematography and Theatre won the first prize.

In addition, two second prizes and three third prizes were presented.

The writing competition entitled – What impresses you most about the EU, write it down and win a ticket to Brussels – was launched during January 2015. It was open to Vietnamese young people, under 35, across the country.

Vietnamese Folklore Arts Association urged to promote folk arts

The Vietnamese Folklore Arts Association (VFAA) should focus on projects to research, collect, preserve and develop valuable Vietnamese cultural and folk arts, actively contributing to building an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity.

The request was made by Politburo member, Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) and Head of the CPVCC Commission for Communication and Education, Dinh The Huynh, at the closing ceremony of the VFAA’ seventh National Congress (2015 – 2020) in Hanoi on May 27.

The two-day congress was attended by 273 delegates representing more than 1,100 members of 78 branches of the VFAA around the country.

During the 2010 – 2015 period, the VFAA completed and published 1,723 research works under the project ‘Announcing and Popularising cultural and folk arts property of Vietnamese ethnic groups’.

The association has also invested in numerous projects on sea and island folklore, contributing to affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over seas and islands.

Over the past years, 282 artisans across the country have been honoured for their great contributions to the development of the Vietnamese folklore.

Addressing the congress, Politburo member Huynh urged the VFAA to fully take in the Party’s Resolutions on culture, literature and arts as well as raise its members’ awareness of effectively implementing the association’s resolutions.

VFAA should promote the implementation of the project ‘Announcing and Popularising cultural and folk arts property of Vietnamese ethnic groups’ to contribute to preserving and introducing folk culture and arts to international friends.

Delegates at the congress elected a new executive committee for the association in the 2015 – 2020 tenure and Professor, Doctor of Science To Ngoc Thanh was re-elected as the VFAA President.

Quang Nam moves to develop tourism

Quang Nam is home to three famous attractions – the World Cultural Heritage Sites of Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary, and the World Biosphere Reserve surrounding the Cham Islands.

Hoi An, recognised by UNESCO as a heritage site in 1999, is an old trading port that dates back to the 15th century. Its architecture and layout reflect the indigenous and foreign influences that melted together to produce the unique character of the town.

My Son Sanctuary is a cluster of abandoned and partially ruined Cham temples. Constructed between the 4th and the 13th century AD, it used to be the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom.

Meanwhile, the Cham Islands (Cu Lao Cham) constitute a group of eight islets, which form part of the Cu Lao Cham Marine Park, a World Biosphere Reserve also recognised by UNESCO. The islands are well-known for their rich marine ecosystems with more than 300 species of coral, as well as beautiful sand beaches and forested hills.

However, the advantages and potential of these tourist attractions have yet to be fully tapped, especially those of the Cham Islands.

According to Director of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Dinh Hai, the province is carrying out appropriate investment policies, actively coordinating with the business community, and focusing on domestic tourists to improve the situation.

Quang Nam has also pledged favourable conditions for enterprises and localities to diversify tourist products and improve their quality at the famous destinations.

With the support from Mangroves for the Future (MFF), the Cu Lao Cham Marine Conservation Centre has coordinated with local residents to implement a project restoring coral reefs around the Cham Islands to attract more tourists, especially those fond of diving.

A number of new tourist products have also been introduced, including tours to traditional trade villages of fishermen.

Last year, the central coastal province welcomed 1.7 million tourists.
