Vietnamese model illegally competes at Miss Southeast Asia

VietNamNet Bridge – Model Nguyen Thi Quynh Nga, 20, explained that she had received an invitation from the organizers of the Miss Southeast Asia beauty contest too late, and could not get a permit from the state agency.

Miss Southeast Asia 2015 started on September 24 and will close on October 3 in Malaysia. The pageant includes representatives from nine Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnamese model Nguyen Thi Quynh Nga (1.71 m tall, body measurements of 83-60-95).

Quynh Nga has confirmed that she had not completed the necessary procedures to get a permit from the relevant body, the Performing Arts Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, to represent Vietnam in this contest.

The model’s manager explained that Nga applied for the pageant as a trial, so she did not learn about the procedures.

“On September 22, only two days before the competition began, she unexpectedly received an invitation from the organizers. At that time, she found out that she had not asked for a permission from the management body. She was very reluctant. But the organizers not only sent the letter of invitation but also booked a round-trip air ticket and hotel as well as prepared everything for her. So Nga decided to go to Malaysia to participate in the pageant,” the manager said.

This person said that after returning to Vietnam, Quynh Nga was willing to comply with all requirements of the authorities.

An official from the Performing Arts Department said the agency would examine the case of Nga and make a decision soon.

Under the provisions of the Performing Arts Department, before joining any international beauty competition, contestants must win an award at a local beauty contest and must ask for the Performing Arts Department’s permission to represent Vietnam at international pageants. Violators will have to pay fine from VND15 million to VND30 million ($700-$1,500).

At the meeting with the Vietnam press in mid-2015, Director of the Performing Arts Department Nguyen Dang Chuong confirmed that the department would tighten management this year, especially for models and women who illegally participate in international beauty contests.

In 2014, model Dieu Linh attended Miss Tourism International (the predecessor of Miss Southeast Asia pageant) without permission. She won the top award and was fined VND22.5 million.

Earlier, model Phan Hoang Thu had to pay fine of VND15 million for the same violation, also at this contest.

Miss Southeast Asia pageant, formerly known as the Miss Tourism International, has been held in Malaysia for more than 20 years. The event has attracted many Vietnamese contestants, such as Ngoc Diem in 2008 or Huong Giang in 2003.
