Vietnam ministry rejects rumor of car spanrices surging next year

The Ministry of Finance has denied rumors that retail prices of automobiles will be hiked significantly at the beginning of next year given a new taxation regime, local media reported.

At many dealerships, salespeople have told their customers that a special consumption tax mechanism, which will take effect on January 1, 2016, will trigger a retail price hike of 15-30 percent, news website VietNamNet said.

The rumor has led to a rise in sales of imported automobiles at many dealerships, especially those in Vietnam’s biggest cities Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Those who have planned to buy a car are rushing to realize their intention before possibly having to pay the extra amount caused by the new taxation regime.

However, one expert from the Ministry of Finance told VietNamNet that there will be no such price surge.

Regulations on the new taxation regime including very specific guidelines from the finance ministry have been cascaded to all automotive businesses, he said.

Given the new special consumption tax rate, the retail price of imported cars, or CBUs, from the start of 2016 will only be 1.2-5 percent higher the wholesale price, excluding value-added tax, he added.

Automobiles that are built thoroughly in one country and then shipped to other nations are called CBUs.

All of the information is mentioned in Circular 195/2015/TT-BTC guiding the implementation of Government Decree No. 108/2015/ND-CP dated October 28, 2015 and providing detailed regulations and guidelines for the application of the new special consumption tax, he told VietNamNet.

In Article 5 of the section specifying the calculation of the new tax rate in the circular, the Ministry of Finance presented an example of a CBU with a wholesale price of US$20,000.

With an import duty of 70 percent, a special consumption tax rate of 45 percent, and an official foreign exchange rate of VND22,500 to the U.S. dollar, the wholesale price of the CBU in Vietnam will be at VND1.165 billion (US$51,260).

According to an expert from the Ministry of Finance, with the new tax regime, the retail prices of the majority of CBUs will be 1.2-3 percent higher than the wholesale prices for cars with a small engine capacity, and 4-5 percent more expensive for vehicles with a bigger engine capacity.

This will not lead to a 15-30 percent retail price surge as rumored, he added.

In a press conference in October this year, Pham Dinh Thi, head of the Tax Policy Department under the finance ministry, said the price of small imported cars may go down sharply in the next four years given the adjustment in taxes levied on them following the commitments of Vietnam to join multiple regional and international free trade agreements.

The price drop applicable to imported cars with an engine capacity smaller than one liter is due to the exemption of import tax and a dip in special consumption tax, according to news website VnExpress, which cited calculations by the department.

The prices of such small cars may plunge 42 percent compared to the current rates, Thi said.

As seen in the roadmap on excise tax reduction for imported cars with nine seats or fewer, the special consumption tax rates will drop from 45 percent to 40 percent, 30 percent and 20 percent by June 2016 to 2017-end, 2018, and 2019, for vehicles with engines of one liter and below.

The rates for 1-to-1.5-liter cars will also drop from 45 percent to 40 percent, 35 percent and 25 percent from June 2016 to 2017-end, 2018, and 2019, respectively.

Meanwhile, the duties slapped on 1.5-to-2-liter automobiles will be cut from 45 percent to 40 percent, falling to 30 percent by 2018 and 2019.

According to the Vietnam Association of Automobile Manufacturers (VAMA), total sales in the first 11 months reached 215,517 vehicles, up 57 percent over the same period last year.

Particularly in November, turnover rose 86 percent year on year.

The VAMA forecast that total sales would meet or exceed the record level of 220,000 vehicles sold by the end of this year.

Vietnam’s foreign caspanital sees double-digit sspanike in 2015

Double-digit growth has been forecast for both committed and disbursed foreign direct investment (FDI) by the end of 2015, according to new figures released by the General Statistics Office.

Total newly-registered and additional FDI in Vietnam has reached US$22.76 billion so far this year, up 12.5 percent compared with 2014, the GSO said.

As of December 15, the Southeast Asian country had attracted 2,013 FDI projects with a combined registered capital of $15.58 billion, a 26.8 percent rise in terms of volume but down 0.4 percent in value against the same period last year.

Meanwhile, disbursed FDI is estimated to be $14.5 billion, up 17.4 percent over the previous year.

Processing and manufacturing are the largest contributors with investment totaling $15.23 billion, accounting for 66.9 percent of the registered capital.

They are followed by electricity and gas with $2.81 billion (12.4 percent), real estate with $2.39 billion (10.5 percent), and other industries with $2.32 billion (10.2 percent).

Ho Chi Minh City takes the lead among 48 localities in attracting new FDI, with a registered capital of $2.81 billion, making up 18 percent of the total.

The southern economic hub is followed by the southern province of Tra Vinh with $2.52 billion (16.2 percent), the southern province of Binh Duong with $2.46 billion (15.8 percent), and its neighbor Dong Nai Province with $1.47 billion (9.4 percent).

Of the 58 countries and territories that have carried out new investment projects in Vietnam this year, South Korea is the biggest with $2.68 billion, accounting for 17.2 percent of the total newly-registered capital.

Followers are Malaysia with $2.45 billion (15.7 percent), Japan with $1.28 billion (8.2 percent), the United Kingdom with $1.26 billion (8.1 percent), and Singapore with $1.03 billion (6.6 percent).

Earlier this month, Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh told Bloomberg that FDI disbursement would reach about $14 billion by the end of the year, an annual surge of 12 percent.

Bloomberg quoted Minister Vinh as saying that total capital commitments in 2015 are also forecast to be higher than the previous year"s figure of $21.9 billion.

“Our improving investment environment and trade agreements help attract more companies to move from China and other regional countries to Vietnam,” Vinh told Bloomberg.

Vietnam to set negative interest for dollar despanosits: cbank governor

The State Bank of Vietnam may slash interest on deposits in U.S. dollars to even below the current rate of zero to continue its de-dollarization drive, particularly after the FED rate hike, the central bank’s governor has said.

On December 17, the SBV abolished the cap on individual dollar deposit rates after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time in nearly a decade, but Governor Nguyen Van Binh said more measures will be taken to de-dollarize the economy.

FED raised the range of its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to between 0.25 percent and 0.50 percent, according to Reuters.

“We respect the right to keep foreign currencies of the public and businesses, but when it comes to doing transactions in Vietnam, the dong must be used,” he told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper in an interview published Monday.

“The ultimate goal of [our] de-dollarization plan is that everyone has to withdraw the Vietnamese dong for use, even though they have a legal source of foreign currencies.”

Binh said the measures to be taken with the U.S. dollar will be similar to what the central bank has done to discourage local residents from keeping and using gold in the last few years.

“People used to be able to enjoy an interest rate for their gold savings, but they currently have to pay fees to keep their precious metal at credit institutions,” he said.

Vietnamese banks have stopped mobilizing gold deposits since late 2012, and began charging ‘gold keeping fees’ the following year.

“We may do the same with savings in dollars in the coming time,” Binh said.

Prior to the removal of the cap on individual dollar deposit rates, the central bank also scrapped the ceiling for dollar deposits offered by banks to organizations and companies.

“We do not rule out the possibility that a negative interest rate will be applied to both of the deposits,” Binh said.

This means that instead of paying interest to depositors, lenders will charge them for dollar-denominated savings, according to the governor.

The U.S. dollar is currently able to be traded in Vietnam within a band of VND21,233 and VND22,547, following the latest forex rate adjustment by the State Bank of Vietnam in August.

Despite the zero interest rate for dollar deposits, the greenback is still being exchanged near its ceiling, which the SBV governor attributed to ‘psychological factors.’

“The coming measures will all target such factors, and once there is no longer dollar hoarding in the economy, the interest rate for dollar deposits can be increased,” Binh asserted.

The governor added the central bank is taking steps to apply a new management mechanism to the interbank trading band, which determines the official dollar/dong exchange rate.

The trading band for VND-USD transactions is currently set at three percent, which Binh said “still allows dollar speculators to make profits.”

“But in the future we will consider changing the interbank rate frequently, even on a daily basis, so there are risks for those speculating on the foreign currency,” he said.

“The dollar you buy today will bring losses the following day, when the central bank changes the interbank trading rate, so it is more risky for the hoarders.”

Vietnam launches safeguard investigation as domestic steelmakers hurt by Chinese imspanorts

The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade has launched a safeguard investigation into imports of steel billets and bars, at a time when domestic steelmakers are hurt by imported products, particularly from China.

The probe is carried out to determine whether Vietnam should take a safeguard action, such as levying higher duties on the imports, according to the directive signed by Minister Vu Huy Hoang.

Safeguard action is among three trade remedies as per international law, besides anti-dumping action and countervailing duty measures, according to the Vietnam Competition Authority (VCA) under the ministry.

The investigation has been initiated in the wake of a complaint lodged by a group of four domestic steelmakers, which collectively account for 34.2 percent of the country’s supply of the said products.

The companies, including Hoa Phat Steel JSC, Southern Steel Corp., Thai Nguyen Iron and Steel JSC and Vietnam Italy Steel, demanded that the trade ministry review the material injury imported products had caused to the domestic industry between January 1, 2012 and September 30, 2015.

While only 468,000 metric tons of steel billets were imported into Vietnam in 2012, the volume is expected to rise to 1.5 million metric tons by the end of this year, the steelmakers said in the petition sent to the VCA.

Similarly, steel bar imports this year are forecast to be more than 1.12 million metric tons, compared to only 389,000 metric tons three years ago.

Such an increase of imported products has eaten into the market share of the domestic steelmakers, forcing them to cut production over poor sales.

The steel billet market share of domestic players dropped from 100 percent to 86 percent in 2015, and from 100 percent to 98 percent in the case of steel bars, according to the four companies.

In the meantime, the market share of imported steel billets and bars has jumped 250 percent and 117 percent, respectively, in 2012-15.

Nguyen Van Sua, deputy chairman of the Vietnam Steel Association, said domestic steel billet and bar makers have had to operate at only half of their full capacity in the past year.

“Their sales only rose 10 to 15 percent, whereas the growth of imported products was as strong as 150 percent,” he added.

The four firms demanded that a 45 percent and 33 percent import duty be levied on imports of steel billets and bars, respectively.

The tariffs should be immediately imposed for 200 days, before the trade ministry releases the final conclusion of its safeguard investigation, according to the petition.

“The proposed import duties are justified, given the difficulty the domestic steel industry is facing,” said Le Sy Giang, a trade remedy expert.

“While the decision to call for the safeguard investigation came quite late, it still indicates that Vietnamese businesses have known how to make use of trade regulations as per international law.”

Imports are mostly Chinese

Most of the steel products that will be inspected by the Vietnamese trade ministry were imported from China, according to sources close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

As of the end of November, Vietnam had spent US$6.79 billion importing 13.85 million metric tons of steel of all kinds, with Chinese products making up 61 percent and 55 percent of the volume and value, respectively, according to customs data.

Vietnamese steelmakers are also hurt by a trick local steel importers employ to dodge import duties.

Vietnam currently slaps a zero tariff on imports of steel alloyed with chromium, whereas the non-alloy products are subject to a nine percent tax.

Many businesses therefore import alloy steel billets with a very small content of chromium to enjoy the tariff exemption.

With the small content of chromium not affecting the quality of the steel billets, businesses can turn them into steel products used for construction, instead of importing the highly-taxed non-alloy steel billets.

“This is in fact a trick to evade taxes, which causes huge damage to the state revenue,” a steel expert said.

Steel bars and billets are the fourth commodity, following float glass, cooking oil and monosodium glutamate, to undergo safeguard investigation since 2009.

No action was taken following a probe into imports of float glass, while the sodium glutamate investigation is still ongoing.

Cooking oil is the only product to be taxed following the safeguard investigation, with an import duty of five percent, applicable to the period from May 7, 2013 to May 6, 2014.

The rate, however, will be lowered to two percent for May 7, 2016 – May 6, 2017.

"Xoi vo" - a popular sticky rice in Vietnam

VietNamNet Bridge – Although it is one of the most popular ways of preparing sticky rice, ‘Xoi vo’ (mung bean coated sticky rice) does not actually possess the very characteristic stickiness that usually seen in other types of Xoi. In contrast, the kernels are rathery crumbly, fully coated with well-kneaded yellow mung bean

‘Xoi vo’ is special even starting with its very name. ‘Vo’ in Vietnamese means squeezing hard, and that is exactly how one describes the process of making this “squeezed sticky rice” dish. This sweet delicacy is not easy to cook, but its wonderful taste will truly reward the effort.

As a kind of ‘Xoi’, the main ingredient of ‘Xoi vo’ is glutinous rice, but we also need mung bean, some salt, sugar and vegetable oil to complete the dish. Because the flavor can be ruined by one unqualified grain, so rice and dehusked bean need to be picked carefully. Afterwards they will get soaked separately for up to 12 hours.

Just like ‘Xoi xeo’, mung beans for ‘Xoi vo’ are also steamed and mashed until it becomes powdery. Subsequently, the beans and rice are well mixed together, with a helping hand of salt and vegetable oil; the grain will be covered entirely with granular bean. Well-squeezed steamed mung bean adds a creamy texture and sweet nutty flavor to the rice. Afterwards, everything will be steamed again!

20 minutes in the steamer will make the rice tender, but it is not the end of this complicated and time-consuming process. The cook has to wait for the mung bean glutinous rice to cool off; then roll it between his hands with some sugar. Let it cool, and one can now enjoy his just reward

Teachers, students take test together

The public paid atten-tion to a competition for gifted and talented ninth grade students organised by Hong Linh Town’s Department of Education and Training in central Ha Tinh Province last week as over 70 local teachers were also seated for the same test with the students.

The competition was expected to find the best students in subjects like History, Biology, Chemistry and Geography and rate the teachers, too.

Some people disagreed with the department on the testing, saying that the same test for students and teachers means an underestimation or no respect for teachers.

Meanwhile, the head of the town’s education department, Le Ba Thiem, said this school year saw the first time such a kind of competition was organised in the town.

Since the beginning of this school year, the department informed teachers about the competition and encouraged them to join as the competition results were used to select teachers for nursing the town’s gifted and talented team.

“We expected that the testing made teachers review their knowledge, pay more attention to their work, at least on what they are delivering to students,” Thiem said.

He told an online newspaper tamnhin.net on Sunday that when he inspected classes in the town, he was sad to see some teachers inattentive to maintain and enrich their knowledge.

The laziness and neglect caused mistakes that were possibly avoidable and they disappointed students, Thiem said.

Vice director of Ha Tinh Province’s Education and Training Department, Nguyen Quoc Anh said that the testing for both students and teachers in Hong Linh Town was not a good way to rate teachers.

For teachers, besides knowledge and exam-taking skill, methods to deliver knowledge, to help students obtain knowledge and use it or dig for more information were more important, Anh said.

“I guess that few normal teachers could do exams designed for gifted and talented students because their typical features are expected to find and promote talent and innovation,” he said.

Tran Nhu, a white collar worker in Ha Noi, said that she would not be surprised if a teacher could not answer a question that was designed to challenge fifth graders like her son.

“I sometimes fail to help my son with his math problems. I have a teacher study with him at home weekly and the tutor, who is working for a private school in Ha Noi, is also stuck on questions, particular those at a high level for talented students,” she said.

The teacher, in that case, told her son that she would give him answers later after she reviewed books, Nhu said.

“I expect teachers keep studying, enriching their knowledge and skills so that they could instruct students,” she said.

“I find nothing wrong if teachers and students are seated for the same exam,” Nhu said.

“There is a problem for education managers to solve if teachers cannot pass the exam. We want qualified teachers for our children,” she said.

In 2013, the principal of Cao Thang High school in central Thua Thien Hue Province asked teachers to do the same final tests with twelfth graders.

The move aimed to help the teachers to assess the difficulty of examination questions more exactly, then predict the students’ ability to deal with such questions and the ability of teachers themselves as well.

However, the testing also faced objection by teachers and principals of other local high schools with an argument that it underestimated teachers. — VNS

However, over density of tourists in popular destinations may cause overload of electric power and water supply, waste disposal…Therefore, he suggested Viet Nam should develop theme tourism products, festivals…at unknown destinations. Besides tourism products diversification, Viet Nam tourism should also diversify tourist source markets.

In the coming time, PATA will focus on 5 main contents: tourists allocation to destinations; recommendation of visa waiver for visitors; training human resources; sustainable development (environment, human and community); dealing with crises in the future.

Highly appreciated the suggestion of Mr. Mario Hardy, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan hoped PATA will continue to inform Viet Nam about international tourist market trends; invite famous bloggers to Viet Nam to introduce the country’s image; support human resource training, crisis management, e-marketing….

It was the first seminar co-hosted by the Vietnamese Embassy in Australia and Da Nang municipal authorities as the Da Nang – Viet Nam team in the Clipper 2015-16 Round the World Yacht Race has landed in Sydney port from December 12-26.

Ambassador to Australia Luong Thanh Nghi, in his speech, praised efforts made by Australian captain Wendy Tuck and Vietnamese crew on the Da Nang-Viet Nam yacht, which he said, has fostered friendship and cooperation between Viet Nam and Australia.

Up to 24 crew members, aged 18 to over 70 of various nationalities and backgrounds, live together on board each of the fleet"s twelve 70-foot racing yachts. This means crew have to quickly adapt to being part of a diverse team which eats, sleeps and races together in close quarters.

The race participants are expected to arrive in Da Nang between February 17 and 21.

The twelve Clipper Race yachts with over 250 international crew and supporters will stay in the city until the next leg to Qingdao, China, departing on February 27.

Ancient structures of Champa’s capital found in Binh Dinh

The bottom layer was a square-structured shrine covering 64.78 square metres, which was assumed to date back between the 4 th and 10 th centuries when Vijaya was still a county of Champa Kingdom.

The second layer extended a larger area of 289.59square metres, where archaeologists found a drain, four sections of brick walls and three separate brick floors.

The third layer on top was a system of holes containing brick pieces resembling the Vietnamese ancient method to strengthen the foundation.

The last two structures were estimated to be built between the 11 th and 15 th centuries when Vijaya became the capital of Champa.

The findings, announced on December 18, were results of an excavation carried out by the Center for Imperial City Research under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The excavation also found 6,691 artifacts including pieces of Ying Yang roof tiles, basins, bowls and Sa Huynh pottery.

Culture of HCMC reflected in art

Sai Gon 9.000m2 Phan Chieu (Reflection of Sai Gon in 9,000sq.m) showcases photos around the 9,000 sq.m area around Notre Dame Cathedral.

The exhibition reflects a miniature picture of the city"s lifestyle through images of luxury automobiles parked along streets, from vendors to lottery sellers to old cyclists.

It also features entertaining activities that young people and foreign visitors take part in at the cathedral, the April 30 Park and the city"s Post Office, including taking photos, painting or enjoying street coffee.

"As a photographer, I want to take photos of the city"s lifestyle as a way of keeping memories of my time living in this 9,000-sq m area," said the 63-year-old Thai.

On display are photos that appear in Thai"s 520-page book 150 Nam Hinh Bong Sai Gon (Reflection of Sai Gon over 150 Years), which was released at the exhibition.

The book, published by the Tre (Youth) Publishing House, features 900 documents and photos from 1986 to 2013, which were taken or collected by Thai.

The work consists of three parts. The first part includes 600 photos and documents on Sai Gon from 1863 to 1953, with popular works taken 150 years ago as well as unseen works.

The second part includes 150 photos of the city in the 1950s, which have never been seen or published. They were printed from celluloid film. The last part features 120 photos taken by Thai during the 1980s and 2010s.

"I have spent dozens of years compiling and completing the book," he said.

The book priced at VND550,000 (US$25) is available at bookstores across the country.

Born in Quang Nam Province, Thai moved to HCM City to pursue his studies in 1972. Three years later, he returned to Quang Nam.

In 1976, he returned to HCM City, and has worked for the Department of Education and Training, Tuoi Tre (Youth) and Khoa Hoc Pho Thong (General Science) magazines. He is now a freelance photographer and journalist.

Thai has had three solo exhibitions, and has released four photo books. His book titled Ky Uc Mien Que (Memories of My Native Land) in 1997 brought him a VAPA Cup from the Viet Nam Photographic Artists Association. It was republished in 2011.

He plans to sell his photos on December 19 and 20. Profits will be used to buy bicycles for poor students in rural areas.

The exhibition will be open until December 28 at 122 Suong Nguyet Anh Street in District 1.

Flower street in HCM City to open next month

(Source: duonghoanguyenhue.com)

The festival, the 13th of its kind, will last eight days until 10:00 pm on February 12, one day longer than the previous events.

Themed “HCM City: Peace, Prosperity and Development”, the flower street along Nguyen Hue Street will spread from Le Thanh Tong to Ton Duc Thang with a total length of 720 metres. The Le Loi-Nguyen Hue intersection will be divided into three sections featuring different sub-themes: “Solidarity-Peace”, “ Dynamic-Creative” and “ Integration-Prosperity”.

The area around Statue of late President Ho Chi Minh will be filled with 36 giant pots of yellow apricot blossom trees.

According to Saigontourist, the festival this year will manifest an optimistic spirit and the belief in a bright future.

For the construction of the flower road, the organisers will use a number of natural materials including rattan and bamboo as well as recycled products to shoe their respect for a friendly environment.

The Flower Street Festival is held annually on the occasion of Tet (Lunar New Year) featuring the art of arranging flowers and ornamental plants and honour the values and beauty of HCM City.

Early this year, the city was upgrading Nguyen Hue into a central square for pedestrians only, so the Flower Street was organised on the adjacent Ham Nghi Boulevard .

Early Tet atmosphere at Nhat Tan flower village

Peach blossoms (Photo: VNA)

This year, the Tet holiday falls in early February. Gardeners are plucking peach leaves now so that the trees will have young green leaves, buds and blossoms for Tet, local gardener Nguyen Van Sang said.

Sang said that he usually spends most of the day in his four “sao” (each “sao” is equal to 360 sq.m) peach garden.

"We are so familiar with the farming but always excited and anxious when Tet is coming because the trees are easily affected by weather," Sang said.

The weather this year is unusually hotter than previous years but it will not be a big problem, he said, adding that they are experienced enough to have blossoms for Tet.

Tran Thi Minh, another peach garden owner said that her family is at the garden all the time to nurse the trees and to protect them from thieves.

Some people have already visited the peach gardens to choose trees with unique or nice shapes.

The time before and after Tet in Nhat Tan village is particularly busy.

Before Tet, you can see colourful bossoms, crowds or even traffic jams and gadeners" working. After Tet, the garden became quiet, with few peach trees left but still beautiful with some buds.

Nhat Tan flower village and neighbouring villages like Nghi Tam, Tu Lien, Phu Thuong that are well known for ornamental plants have become more crowded in the last few years as visitors, particular young people, come to take photos with flowers.

Flower branding

Nhat Tan flower village in Nhat Tan Ward, Tay Ho District is famous for peach flowers. Most of the 140 ha of farming land in the ward is used to grow peach flowers. About 690 local households grow peach flowers there.

In 2008, the National Office of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Sciences and Technology granted a patent for the peach flowers grown in Nhat Tan village.

On December 22, Ha Noi"s People"s Committee granted the village the title "Ha Noi Traditional Trade Village 2015" which is expected to promote the image of the flower village.

Kon Tum struggles to save fading gong culture

The provincial authorities and local gong artisans have organised many classes to teach the gong-performing art to ethnic minority residents, especially young people.

Artisan A Thak in Pa Cheng Hamlet, Dak Long Commune, Dak Ha District said he had no gongs to teach local youth the art.

Enthusiastic artisans borrow gong sets from other communes for the teaching, but new learners will soon forget how to play if they do not have the instrument for regular practice.

According to Phan Thanh Hoang, Deputy Director of Kon Tum’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the province currently has 1,900 sets of gongs of various types.

Kon Tum so far has opened 26 classes to teach forms of art and culture to nearly 600 people. The province has 300 groups of gong artists who perform at local rituals and festivals.

The cultural space of gongs was recognised as an Oral Masterpiece and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005.

Gongs, considered the most sacred and valuable asset in every ethnic family in the Central Highlands, have historically been widely played at ethnic minority groups’ traditional rituals and festivals.

Ethnic families in the Central Highlands region are keeping more than 9,880 sets of gongs with over 5,650 sets in Gia Lai and another 2,307 in Dak Lak. Most of the gongs belong to the Jarai, Bahnar, Ede and M’nong groups.

It is currently accommodating more than 3,000 domestic and foreign animals of 150 species, including African zebras, camels, antelopes, Bengali tigers, African lions, and black-and-white ruffed lemurs.

More rare animals will be added to the zoo in the near future, including flamingos, rhinos, and giraffes.

Aside from the two main parts, the Vinpearl Safari also includes the largest veterinary hospital in the Southeast Asian region.

Vingroup aims to turn the park into the second largest zoo park in the world, creating the best spaces for wildlife animals as well as enhancing public awareness in wildlife conservation and helping develop nature tourism in the locality.

Ambassadors to Viet Nam invited to visit largest cave in Quang Binh

(Source: Internet)

The tour is a cultural diplomatic activity co-held by the Foreign Ministry, the Viet Nam National Commission for UNESCO and the provincial authorities.

Son Doong cave, hidden in the UNESCO-recognised World Heritage Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, is more than 200m wide, 150m high, and approximately 9km long.

Within its caverns lie a jungle and a river, and the cave is large enough to fit a 40-storey skyscraper inside. The cave was classified as the largest cave in the world by the British Cave Research Association.

The American news website Huffingtonpost.com declared the cave as an absolute must-see. Son Doong cave was also listed among the "52 Places to Go in 2014" by The New York Times Travel.

The usual tour, operated by Oxalis Adventure Tours since early August, offers five-day and four-night service at the cost of 66 million VND (roughly 3,000 USD) per person during the January–August period.

Each tour requires a team of more than 25 porters and cooks, a tour guide, two cave experts and two park rangers.

This year, Son Doong welcomed over 500 visitors.

National Tourism Year creates new image for Thanh Hoa

The province was selected to host the national event, which is expected to help it welcome 5.5 million domestic and foreign travellers this year.

Over the past five years, the locality has been making great efforts to improve its infrastructure and accommodation services with the aim of contributing to a successful National Tourism Year.

Eleven new tours linked with a variety of local tourist attractions have been launched, including tours on the Ma River, Ma Hao waterfalls and Nang Cat Community Village.

Over 60 foreign art troupes to attend Hue Festival 2016

The figures are much more than those of 2000 – 15 domestic troupes and seven foreign ones.

Speaking at a press conference in Ha Noi on December 17, deputy head of the event’s organisation board Che Cong Chung said the festival’s activities will feature the province’s historical and cultural events, including celebrations marking the 710 years since the founding of Thuan Hoa-Phu Xuan (now Thua Thien-Hue) and 380 years of Hue City.

Within the festival, mayors of cities in East Asia and Latin America will gather together in a conference during which Hue will receive a certificate recognising it as a cultural city, he added.

Chung said the Hue Festival is the first modern festival organised in Viet Nam following the models of famous cities all over the world. The success of the biennial event has boosted Hue’s determination to build the first festival city in the country.

Vietnamese and foreign artists will join together in art performances in the Hue Citadel, An Dinh Palace and other places in the Complex of Hue Monuments.

The “Dem Hoang Cung” (Royal Night) and “Huyen thoai Phuong Dong” (Orient legendary) will be held in the Ngo Mon-Ky Dai Square, enacting original royal activities.

There will also be exhibitions, kite and calligraphy displays, scientific workshops, street music and arts performances, together with sports, cuisine and tourism promotion events.

The exhibition is among a series of events to celebrate the 2015 Da Lat Flower Festival from December 29, 2015 to January 2, 2016.

They include vintage cameras and cinema equipment, cassette players, televisions, paintings, photos and clothing of local people from the old times. The majority of them were donated.

Nguyen Vu Hoang, Director of the Lam Dong Culture Centre, said the exhibition will be a place for visitors who love to explore the old resort city.

Admission is free to all, he added.

The Culture Centre also opens art concerts every night where songs and poems by well-known classical composers – Trinh Cong Son, Ngo Thuy Mien, Vu Thanh An and Pham Duy – are performed.

Relic site of first female doctoral laureate receives national status

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued the decision recognising the national relic site status in mid-2014.

Nguyen Thi Due, also known as Nguyen Ngoc Toan or Dieu Huyen, was born on March 14, 1574, in the place which is now Van An Ward.

At the age of 20, Due disguised herself as a man to take an examination held by King Mac Kinh Cung and won the top position. Though her ruse was discovered, the King forgave her, gave her the name “Tinh Phi”(Descended Star) and married her. He later assigned her to teach his other wives and concubines.

After the Mac dynasty was overthrown, she was still respected and entrusted with the educating of the palace women by the Le Kings and Trinh Lords.

She lived the last days of her life in her hometown and passed away when she was over 80 years old.

The tomb and temple of Nguyen Thi Due in Van An ward of Chi Linh township is among “Chi Linh bat co” – the eight renowned ancient relic sites in Chi Linh township.

The Vietnamese artists will perform symphonic music under the leadership of renowned Japanese conductor Tetsuji Honna.

Immortal works by famous composers will be performed, including William Tell by Gioachino Antonio Rossini, Bugler’s Holiday and The Syncopated Clock by Leroy Anderson, and the Symphony No.5 in C minor op.67 by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Through the programme, the organisers hope to bring an exquisite taste of chamber music closer to art lovers in Viet Nam, especially the young.

“We will give the audience a very abundant and close concert by skillful persons and quality in the professional field,” said Nguyen Tri Dung, the director of VNSC. “The programme’s content is carefully selected from the canonical classical pieces in the world with familiar melodies that we’ve known for a long time.”

The concert’s organising board will raise over VND50 million (US$2,220) from selling 200 tickets for the “Compassionate Heart Fund” to support individuals living in difficult circumstances and people with disabilities, as well as contribute to the development of community cultural and arts activities.
