Exhibition “Stories Told In An Oriental Way” at Manzi

Opening: Fri 29 May 2015, 6.30 pm

Exhibition: 29 May – 20 Jun 2015

Manzi Art Space

14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi

Manzi Art Space is pleased to present ‘Stories Told In An Oriental Way’ – a solo exhibition by visual artist Do Tuan Anh.

The exhibition features Tuan Anh’s latest surreal paintings which were created in 2015, two years after his settlement in Solingen, a small city in Germany.

In Tuan Anh’s previous works, the countryside has been the spiritual foundation which forms the basis of his practice, dominating his perception and approach to art-making. Having to relocate to Germany in 2013 means that the artist has been uprooted from his source of inspiration, leaving him in an in-between state, neither here nor there. And this uncertainty is reflected strongly in his solo show at Manzi.

‘Finding myself lost in a completely different social structure, experiencing a cultural shock, being obsessed with the bleak winter landscape in a strange land, this series of paintings was created as a projection of collision between the outer world and my inner state’ – said the artist.

exhibition Stories Told In An Oriental Way-Do Tuan Anh 2

Combining contradictory conditions of dream and reality, in this series of work, Do Tuan Anh painted unnerving, illogical scenes with photographic precision and created strange creatures with everyday objects. By showing his quirky side, pairing up people and animals with wit and irony, the artist is telling a surrealist tale in an oriental way.

Do Tuan Anh (born 1979) graduated from the University for Art and Design in 2000 and works dominantly as a painter and sculptor. Considered an established visual artist of Vietnam, Do Tuan Anh has intensively exhibited in Vietnam and abroad.

Launching New Poetry – Art Collection: The Shore of Time

Sat 23 May 2015, 3 pm

Heritage Space

Dolphin Plaza, 28 Tran Binh, My Dinh, Ha Noi

Come to the launching New Poetry – Art Collection: The Shore of Time by poet Dinh Hoang Anh and artist Thai Tinh.

The couple artists Dinh Hoang Anh and Thai Tinh are famous for their inspiring collaborated exhibitions. Though there seems to be no relevance between their works – the poetic writings of Anh and the artistic paintings of Thai Tinh, they always find a way to support each other, to fulfill the other. Their collaboration has been full of excitement, bringing new emotional experience to the audience in harmony.

In her latest works, The Shore of Time, poet Dinh Hoang Anh wishes to touch the audience through simple, ordinary poems praising life. Each poem describes an afflatus flashing through the poet in real life, swift and intense. Using her past experience combined with her sense of observation, she recorded her thoughts and feelings of peace in tears, the mystery of a smile, or the immortal moment in which one looses herself to give unrequited love… There, where one could wish to be no longer alone even only in a second, is The Shore of Time. Combine with her works of emotions are the poetic paintings of artist Thai Tinh, also her partner in life.

Free admission, register to join this event here.

Film Concert “Nosferatu”

Wed 27 May 2015, 8 pm

Goethe-Institut Hanoi

56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi

The silent film Nosferatu (1922) by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau represents one of the first horror movies. Centre of the story is the Vampire Count Orlok, who spreads fear and terror and can only be stopped by beautiful Ellen. The expressive effects were already emphasized in the original version by dramatic film music. Conductor Do Kien Cuong and the team of composer in charge Ad van Dongen are now approaching the film in a new way to exploit musically the whole potential of the story. Nosferatu was shortened and condensed, the music new composed. In this way a fully new silent film experience with live music will be created.

As a part of the European Month the Goethe-Institut is pleased to support this special project by giving it stage.

Ad van Dongen works as a composer and sound designer since 1999. He specialized in composing and conducting for documentaries, but he is also interested in abstract sound design like sound design of paintings. Van Dogen received several awards, e.g. the Golden calf national film award, Prix d’Europe, Golden Webby Award.

The composer and conductor Do Kien Cuong studied in New York, where he started experimentating with new forms of notation and use of electronic elements. In 1999 he founded the Hanoi Youth Orchestra. In previous years he started the Duong Dai Festival and the Beethoven Symphony Project. Since 2014 he is member of the Hanoian Trio and currently working as a music lecturer of Troy University in Ho Chi Minh City and National University of Art Education in Hanoi.

Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau (1888-1931) was one of the most important silent film directors and changed the genre through the introduction of moving camera. After he received three academy awards in Hollywood for his work, he addressed himself for a documentary with fictional elements in Polynesia.

Cinema lovers in Vietnam are looking forward to the European Film Festival 2015: current contributions of 13 European countries reflect the variety of Europe – history, culture, society and even the tradition of filmmaking differ from country to country, but are still closely linked to each other. As the German entry the Goethe-Institut Hanoi is contributing the film One day in Europe by Hannes Stöhr.

Four colorful and light-hearted stories about quirky characters and the amusing misunderstandings that cross-cultural communication often provides. All take place on one single day in different cities, and in each case those language barriers are compounded by a chaos of another sort.

Director Hannes Stöhr

You are invited to the screening of UK film “War Requiem” in the European Film Festival 2015

Director, Writer: Derek Jarman

Music: Benjamin Britten

Cast: Nathaniel Parker, Tilda Swinton, Sean Bean, Laurence Olivier

Genre: Drama, War

Year of Production: 1989

Duration: 92’

This film is not for viewers under 16 years old

The film’s dialogue-free collage of images emphasise the atrocities of war, and include through WWI newsreel footage, images of the Cambodian conflict and the bombing of Hiroshima. Benjamin Britten composed his ‘War Requiem’ for the opening of the new Coventry Cathedral in 1963, after the original was destroyed in the Second World War in 1940, and Jarman’s film grew out of his traumatic memory of a military hospital, where as a child he spent a few days, alongside damaged victims of WWII. The film moves between past and present, its narrative unfolding through the eyes of the Old Soldier. The film’s narrative is complex, with spatial and temporal jumps and flashbacks-within-flashbacks, and the actors’ performances are more symbolic than naturalistic.

The War Requiem was not meant to be a pro-British piece or a glorification of British soldiers, but a public statement of Britten’s anti-war convictions. It was a denunciation of the wickedness of war, not of other men. The fact that Britten wrote the piece for three specific soloists – a German baritone(Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau), a Russian soprano (Galina Vishnevskaya), and a British tenor (Peter Pears) – demonstrated that he had more than the losses of his own country in mind, and symbolized the importance of reconciliation. The piece was also meant to be a warning to future generations of the senselessness of taking up arms against fellow men.

New SUMMER Chill Out Garden & New Sound installation

Rotterdam (NL) based Ben La Desh’s first contact with music and rhythm was during his youth in Africa. Now, years later, after teenage times spent toying with computers and exploring his taste, Ben La Desh’s sound is a tropical and humid fusion of moody disco and deep house. This perfectionist’s first release came in 2011 on Outernational, followed by a solo EP on Sleazy Beats Black Ops entitled Stop That Groove Girl, this first EP went straight to number one in Juno’s sales chart and stayed there for a number of weeks.

Off the back of that he continued to rise steadily through the ranks clocking up more fine releases on labels like Dirt Crew, Young Adults and releasing remixes for the likes of 6th Borough Project’s Borough 2 Borough LP (Delusions of Grandeur) and Urulu on Let’s Play House. Support continues to flood in for his infectious and heartwarming sounds, including tastemakers like Session Victim, The Revenge, Jimpster, Eddie C, Norm de Plume and more.

1, Gentle colors

Director: Nguyen Trung Kien

“Gentle colors” is a movie about a guy stuck in the memories of his old love. Audiences will see both the protagonist’s current stalemate and his inconsolable nostalgia. Set in the dreamy, romantic but blue Lyon; the film crew chose to use camera angle to represent the characters’ paradigm, so the audiences can totally immerse into the movie. Along with the good music, this movie would surely worth your time.

Awards: 2014 Golden Lotus audiences’ choice

2, Running on crutches

Director: Nguyen Ha Phuong

“Running on crutches” is a story about the love of two sisters. After being seriously injured and cannot fight again, a female pugilist lived together with her younger sister, and has to rely on her for almost everything. One day, she discovered that her little sis is practicing Taekwondo, like she did before the accident. On that specific moment, HER ENVY ROSE and THINGS BEGAN TO GET OUT OF CONTROL..

3, What’s out there

Director: Nguyen Diep Thuy Anh

With the background set in an old tenement of Hanoi in the late-90s, It’s a story about one summer day of a young boy – who’s been locked up inside his home by his parents – and his adventure with the neighbors – the adventure of LOVE. The film delivers a nostalgic but pleasant feeling to the audiences. A child’s love is as much sweet as an adult’s one can be, but it’s much more lovely. A child’s love is unique in their very own way.

Awards:

2013 Golden Lotus audiences’ choice

2013 Golden Lotus judges’ choice

2014 Hanoi Film Festival Premium prize for best short films

4, YRML

Director: Tran Thanh Van

YRML stands for “Yeu roi ma lai” (literally translated: Loved already)

School days and first love has always been an infinite source of inspirations for film-makers, and it is also the topic of YRML – a short romantic film about 3 students when the girl’s about to go study abroad. The film shows a witty and gentle story of teenage love with a pleasant surprise. No cheesy lines, no over-acting; the amateur film crew has given us a nice trip back to teenage time; and it’s definitely worth-a-go.

Afterwards will be a question and answer session with directors

Exhibition “Soul of Do”

Opening: Fri 22 May 2015, 5 pm

Exhibition: 22 May – 12 Jun 2015

Korean Cultural Center

49 Nguyễn Du, Hà Nội

Following the success of Hanji Meets Viet Nam Exhibition, Zo Project wishes to introduce Do paper (made from the bark of Rhamnoneuron balansae) to Korean public and the world through “Hon Do” (Soul of Do) exhibition.

In “Hon Do”, the audience will step into the traditional space, learning about historical Do paper and the paper making process. You will then be brought to the applicable art space with contemporary works created on the traditional texture of Do paper.

The exhibition is honored to witness for the first time the combination of two artists: Xuan Nhu (Calligrapher) and Yoyo (Painter), which is expected to hit the headlines. Chinese ink – long used by our forefathers going hand in hand with watercolor – fresh and bright on Do paper creates a harmonization of traditional and modern elements. Thanks to the exhibition, the two artists have had the opportunity to work together and shown their good will in cooperation. Currently they are working very hard to prepare for the exhibition, and we are very confident that our audience will gain the best from their cooperation.
