Film festival for students calls for submissions

Students from colleges and universities in HCM City have been invited to join the second Film Festival for Students launched by the city’s Students Association this week.

The event is designed to give students an opportunity to explore their creativity in film and video. The organisers will give prizes for best short film, short news report, music video and public relations trailer.

Films featuring social and environmental issues as well as climate change have been encouraged.

A jury panel including dozens of skilled directors and cinematographers from film studios and cinematography schools will choose the winners from 15 finalists.

The best films will be screened later in cinemas.

Participants can work alone or in a group. They can submit their works via the website www.hoisinhvienTPHCM.com or at 4 Alexandre de Rhodes Street, District 1, before December 4.

In 2003, the festival attracted 99 short films, documentaries and video clips. All works featured stories related to the dreams and hopes of youth.

The first prize went to two short films, Noted and Uoc Mo Va Nhung Cung Duong Nguoc Chieu Dai Lo (The Dream and Challenges), sent by student groups from the HCM City University of Foreign Trade and University of Social Science and Humanities, respectively. Both works targeted youth and their lifestyles.

HCM City event promotes New Zealand tourism

New Zealand’s spectacular sights, whale watching, Maori cultural heritage and extreme activity tours were highlighted at tourism seminars in HCM City and Ha Noi as part of a Vietnamese effort to promote tourism to the country.

The seminars held on Tuesday brought together nearly 100 representatives from Vietnamese and New Zealand tourism providers, travel agents, hotels and other industry stakeholders. The events provide industry information and opportunities to expand tourism links between the countries.

“Thirty-three thousand New Zealanders visited Viet Nam in 2014. We’re very keen to see similar numbers of our Vietnamese friends visiting New Zealand,” said New Zealand Ambassador Haike Manning.

Contest seeks out talented reformed theatre actors

The second Hat Ngoc Mua Vang (Pearl of Golden Crop) contest was held last week to seek actors for cai luong (reformed theatre) and don ca tai tu Nam Bo (southern amateur music).

Last week, 24 out of 200 contestants were chosen from preliminary rounds held in Can Tho, Bac Lieu, Vinh Long, Tien Giang and HCM City.

They will compete for excellence awards worth VND40 million (US$1,700) each.

Twenty-four contestants will be chosen for the audition round to be aired on VTV Can Tho 1 channel from October 3 to November 1.

In the final round to be held on January 2 next year, the final six contestants will perform together in a full play instead of a play extract as in other cai luong contests.

Besides the excellence awards, there will be four “characteristic” awards worth VND15 million each and “favourite” award worth VND5 million.

People’s artist Tran Ngoc Giau, a contest consultant, said this year’s contest would not limit ages for participants, including children.

The contest is organised by VTV Can Tho in collaboration with Khanh Vuong Media Communication JS Co.
