Alessandro del Piero to visit Hanoi

Former Italian international and World Cup winner Alessandro del Piero is coming to Hanoi on June 13 as brand ambassador for Vespa – the Italian brand of scooter manufactured by Piaggio.

The Juventus legend said as a celebrity spokesperson of Vespa he has the responsibility for promoting the image and popularity of the company and its products in Vietnam.

Vietnamese football fans will have a rare opportunity to shake hands, take photos and get an up-close glimpse of the idol at a number of exchange activities.

Museum of Fine Arts opens new exhibition area

The HCMC Museum of Fine Arts has opened a new exhibition area featuring 397 ancient and contemporary artworks.

The museum’s new exhibition area is a three-storey building with Indochinese architecture at 54 Nguyen Thai Binh Street, District 1.

The artworks on display come with different categories, including southern ceramics, ancient sculptures, religious statues, bronze artifacts, and Buddha statues of Khmer people in the south.

Visitors can learn about the spirit and cultural life of people in the past, and gain an insight into Cham, Oc Eo and Khmer cultures.

Local artists infuse new spirit into dance stage

The French Institute in Vietnam on June 3 announced a contemporary dance show “Non” (conical hat) combined with Vietnam’s traditional music by local choreographer Vu Ngoc Khai and composer Ngo Hong Quang at Idecaf in HCMC’s District 1 at 8 p.m. on June 13.

Vu Ngoc Khai and Ngo Hong Quang were both educated in contemporary art in the Netherlands. They then started their own project “Non” in January 2015 in Amsterdam.

Their artistic inspiration comes from Vietnamese culture, such as the conical hat, soil, water, banh chung (square sticky rice cake stuffed with seasoned pork and mung beans), banh day (round sticky rice cake), and local traditional musical instruments. According to the artists, the combination of contemporary dance and folklore music creates not only a visual display of Vietnamese culture but illustrates Vietnamese musicality.

Vu Ngoc Khai is a dancer and choreographer who has studied and worked in Vietnam and Europe. In 2006, he studied at the Rotterdam Dance Academy on a scholarship from Holland. Since then, he has worked for numerous dance companies and theaters in Vietnam, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

Over the years, Ngo Hong Quang with his unique dan nhi performance have attracted audiences not only in Vietnam but also in Thailand, South Korea and European countries. Quang also learned how to play various types of traditional Vietnamese instruments at the Vietnam National Academy of Music and other mountainous areas around the country. Recently, he studied contemporary composition in Den Haag Royal Conservatory of Music in the Netherlands to broaden his musical creation mindfulness.

Tickets to the show at Idecaf at 28 Le Thanh Ton Street in District 1 are priced at VND200,000 but students pay only VND150,000. For further information, call 08 3823 9968.

Telefilm 2015 gets underway in HCM City

The Vietnam International Exhibition on Film and Television Technology – Telefilm 2015 – kicked off on June 4 in Ho Chi Minh City at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre.

“Digital technology is changing the way people throughout the world communicate and Vietnam needs to change its mindset to keep pace,” said Vietnam Television (VTV) General Director Tran Binh Minh.

If not, the country will be left behind and lose influence in an arena for which it has a strong competitive advantage, he underscored.

Opening day of the three-day event attracted entities specializing in photography, film and audio-visual communications from 15 countries around the globe including France, Canada, Japan, China and Singapore.

About 300 trade-stands featured the latest major products and technologies in the television broadcasting industry such as copyright, advertising, image and sound effects, digital equipment, cable and satellite television services.

A wide range of other activities including seminars, meetings with famous actors and editors are also planned for the exhibition.   

Big gemstone collection goes on display in Hoi An

Gemstone collector Duong Ba Dung is showcasing his collection of over 600 precious stones at a gallery space in the ancient town of Hoi An.

It’s one of the biggest exhibits of gemstones in Viet Nam.

He said it took 20-years to collect his precious stones, and the gallery was a popular destination for tourists in Hoi An The gemstones range from raw stones, tektites, sapphires and tourmaline.

Over 400 sculptures and precious stone jewellery are also on display at the gallery.

Japan organises film-making contest for students

Vietnamese secondary and high school students are being encouraged to take part in a film contest organised by the Japanese Embassy and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.

Contestants can submit films of three minutes in length with subtitles in Vietnamese or Japanese.

With the theme “When You Feel Happy”, the contest will run until August 1. It aims to help students to learn to express their opinions, nurture their dreams and try to make them come true.

The top entries will be sent to the international film making contest for Asian children held in Japan in November.
