Can Tho backs plan for air service to Bangkok





Dao Anh Dung, vice chairman of Can Tho City, told the yesterday that at a review meeting on the Can Tho-Dalat route over theweekend that he agreed on Vietravel’s proposal to launch Can Tho-Bangkokservice in mid-July.


Dung said Vietravel would work with Thai VietJet and the Consulate General of Thailand in HCMC over the plan.


Vietravel proposed one chartered flight every five days on the route inthe initial time to meet demand for air travel between Can Tho andBangkok. The joint venture airline between a low-cost airline ofThailand and VietJet Aviation Joint Stock Co. (VietJetAir) is expectedto operate its Airbus aircraft configured with 160 seats.


As for the Can Tho-Dalat route, Dung said tourists have found itinconvenient to travel by air between the two destinations when thereare only two weekly flights on Thursdays and Sundays.


Passengers want more flights between Can Tho and Dalat on Tuesdays andall flights on this route to be operated at around noon, instead of lateafternoon as at the moment.


Vietnam Air Services Co. (VASCO) kicked off the Can Tho-Dalat route onMay 7 and its seating occupancy averaged nearly 58% before jumping tosome 70% over the past week. The subsidiary of Vietnam Airlines uses its67-seat ATR72 for Can Tho-Dalat flights and fares start fromVND999,000.


“Seating occupancy has increased as demand has picked up in summer,” Dung said.


Can Tho attracted more than 2.47 million visitors in the first fivemonths of this year, up 75% compared to the same period last year. Thetotal number included 237,740 foreigners. 


In addition to flights to Dalat, there are services connecting the cityand HCMC, Hanoi, Phu Quoc, Con Dao and Danang as well as Taiwan.
