Microsoft ospanens first authorized reseller store in Vietnam

U.S. software titan Microsoft inaugurated Thursday its first authorized reseller store in Vietnam, a little more than one year after taking over the devices and services business from Finland’s Nokia.

Located in Hanoi, the maiden Microsoft Store will offer an assortment of best-in-class Microsoft products, including Windows phones, feature phones, Surface devices as well as Windows, Microsoft Office 365, among others, the Vietnamese unit of the Windows operating system maker said the same day on its website.

Laptops and tablets manufactured by Microsoft partners are also available at the reseller store, whereas users can test out the Live Experience Table, which will show them how they can enjoy seamless integration across multiple screens through Microsoft devices, apps and services.

The Hanoi store is the first to be opened under a strategic partnership between Microsoft and FPT, a leading Vietnamese tech firm.

“Today’s event paves the way for the company to bring its cloud and personal computing technologies to more consumers,” Microsoft Vietnam general director Vu Minh Tri said at the opening ceremony.

Microsoft sees Vietnam as a key market for its mobile device segment, according to Vinod Muralidharan, chief representative of Microsoft Mobile Vietnam.

The tech company says its Vietnamese unit is the largest U.S. firm in the Southeast Asian country, with more than 10,000 employees.

The software giant has been in Vietnam for 18 years and established a network of over 500 partners.

The Windows maker acquired Nokia’s devices and services business in a US$7.2 billion deal in April 2014, and has been restructuring the unit since.

The restructuring includes transiting Nokia branded stores to Microsoft ones, with the very first Microsoft authorized reseller in Asia Pacific launched in Malaysia on May 9 this year, the company said in a separate press release.

Microsoft was reportedly shutting down two handset plants it inherited from Nokia in China and relocating part of the manufacturing to Vietnam, according to media reports in February.
