Ho Chi Minh City has started installing surveillance cameras on its buses in an attempt to protect passengers from sexual harassment and pickpocketing.

The project, which will be carried out from now to the end of next year, aims to equip all buses in the city with three security cameras to monitor all activities onboard during their journeys.

Transport officials believe they will be able to keep track of violations better with the new system. Each set of three cameras costs the city VND 13 million (US$650)

Nguyen Van Trieu, head of the bus company 19/5, said that the surveillance cameras will also help improve the attitude of bus drivers and their assistants.

Hanoi is still considering all-female buses to prevent sexual harassment against women passengers.
