Saigon Reggae Festival to open this weekend

Saigon Reggae Festival, a 10-hour event of reggae music, visual arts, dance and culinary treats, will open at Cargo Bar on Saturday.

The music programme will showcase 12 international DJs, MCs and bands including King Cargo, Dubwise, Dan Lo, Jase Nguyen and Mekong Delta Force. Saigon Dub Station will also have an LED light performance.

A live painting contest titled One Love is scheduled for city-based young artists, and a pop-up art exhibition will display 40 works by local and foreign artists.

An international food street will present dishes from international cuisine like jerk chicken from Jamaica, pancakes from the Netherlands as well as a variety of salads, cakes and cookies.

The festival takes place from 6pm to 4am at 7 Nguyen Tat Thanh Street in District 4.

US contemporary dancer to host workshop

American dancer and choreographer Emily Navarra will host a contemporary dance workshop at the Zero Station on Sunday.

The workshop will focus on responses to stimuli, the release technique, partnering and group structures, choreographic devices and environmental movement explorations.

Navarra, a graduate of dance study from the University of South Florida, is now working as a freelance artist. She has performed in the US, Europe, Southeast Asia and North Africa.

The event will be held from 10 am to 3 pm at Quarter 288, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street in District 3. Admission fee is VND550,000 including lunch.

B-movie to screen at CAMA ATK

CAMA ATK will present a free screening of the short movie Nefertitty in Space by Lola Rocknrolla tomorrow.

Released in November 2014 at the Anthology Film Archives in Manhattan, Nefertitty in Space is the latest film by Lola Rocknrolla, who also is a writer and editor.

B-movie or blaxploitation is a film genre from the 1970s that targeted the urban African-American audience. Being the first style to use funk and soul music, the film mainly features African-American actors.

After the screening of Nefertitty in Space, DJ Deathbunny will take to the decks with various genres of music, ranging from dark party and electric, to krautrock and underground.

The free night will start from 8pm at 73A Mai Hac De Street.

Art student hosts first solo exhibition

Art student Dang Viet Linh from the Ha Noi University of Industrial Fine Art will present his first solo exhibition Mo (Dream) at from Viet Nam Fine Arts Museum from Saturday.

The exhibition will showcase more than 20 psychedelic and surreal paintings, which he created since three years ago while he was working to became a professional artist.

The artworks express the 22-year-old man’s dreams of a fantasy world, where humans live without any cultural or racial barriers, ruled by only freedom, joy, happiness and kindness.

His paintings are a combination of bright colours which present both typical traditional Vietnamese and modern features.

The exhibition will be open to the public until July 29. The Viet Nam Fine Arts Museum is at 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street.

Group exhibition PRISM at Manzi Art Space

Manzi Art Space will present PRISM – Lan[g] Kinh Lan[g] Tru on Sunday – a group exhibition by Ly Hong Ly, Patricia Nguyen and John Lee.

The exhibition is an interactive multi-media video, sound, photography installation and poetry performance project including a series of artist’s books that explore the relationship between bodies, shifting landscapes and cultural memory in Viet Nam.

Through an embodied experience attending to the sense of sight, sound, and tactile navigation, PRISM offers an experience that challenges the viewer to question the relationship between notions of memory and amnesia, home and displacement, and construction and destruction.

The exhibition will open at 6pm at 14 Phan Huy Ich Street. The free show will run until August 17.

Party features int’l bands and dancers at Yoko

Yoko bar will host a Hem Hem dance party with performances of international music bands and dancers on Saturday.

The night will feature Japanese band Ska and Singaporean band Welcome The Machine, and Tahitian dancers.

The event will begin at 9 pm at 22A Nguyen Thi Dieu Street in District 3. Entrance is free.

Hawaiian dance party at Chill Sky Bar

A Hawaiian theme party called Le Beat Tropique featuring hula dance performances will be held at Chill Sky Bar on Friday.

Participants are asked to wear tropical and floral clothes.

The venue is on the 26th floor, AB Tower at 76A Le Lai Street in District 1.

Japan kicks off Haiku poem contest for locals

The consulate general of Japan in HCMC, in conjunction with the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) and Van nghe TPHCM (HCMC art) newspaper, is holding the 5th Haiku poem contest in Vietnamese for people of all ages nationwide.  

Haiku poems are a short poetic form of Japanese uniqueness (of 17 syllables, 5-7-5, pauses in three sentences) and are over four centuries old as they developed in the first half of the Edo period (1603-1868) when poet Matsuo Basho described the natural world and traveled around Japan. Haiku poetry is now used in many countries like the U.S. and China and elsewhere in Africa.

There are an increasing number of people in Vietnam loving Haiku poems. The biennial contest aims to create an experimental playground for culture and literature enthusiasts.

The form of a Haiku poem in Vietnamese language will consist of three sentences with an order of 5-7-5 syllables. A contestant is able to send only one entry to the contest whose theme is free. The deadline for registration is September 30 and entries should be emailed to thithohaiku15@gmail.com or mailed to the address of the faculty of literature and linguistics of the USSH at 10-12 Dinh Tien Hoang Street in HCMC’s District 1. Results announcement and awards ceremony are expected in mid-December.

A judging panel consists of Associate Professor Doan Le Giang, head of the faculty of literature and linguistics of USSH, poet Phan Hoang, vice chairman of the HCMC Writers’ Association, and Dr. Nguyen Vu Quynh Nhu, Haiku scholar and a member of the Japan-based World Haiku Association.

The organizers and sponsor Ajinomoto Vietnam will grant one first prize, one second prize and ten consolation prizes. Poems which pass the qualifying round will be posted on http://www.hcmcgj.vn.emb-japan.go.jp, http://www.khoavanhoc-ngonngu.edu.vn

Erato Art Studio will be opened on July 26 in HCMC’s District 7 to provide a fresh playground for art lovers.

Inspired by the saying by world famous artist Pablo Picasso “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life”, the space is meant to be a rendezvous for people of all ages to chase down their dream, and share love and passion together.
