Musician Phan Huynh Dieu passes away


Musician Phan Huynh Dieu, theauthor of many revolutionary and love songs, took his last breathe atthe age of 91 at the Thong Nhat hospital in Ho Chi Minh City on June 29.

Phan Huynh Dieu was born on November 11, 1924 in Da Nang city. He waswell-known as one of the most outstanding Vietnamese musicians of the20th century.


He started his composing career in 1940 with the love song ‘Trau cau’ (Betel and Areca).


He joined the army during the resistance war against French colonialismand wrote many revolutionary pieces including ‘Nho on Ho Chu Tich’ (Begrateful to President Ho) and ‘Que toi o mien Nam’ (My hometown is inthe south).


In 1975, Phan Huynh Dieu went to Ho Chi Minh City and worked for thecity’s Music Association. He composed over 100 songs with beautifulmelodies and lyrics, more than half of them recreated from famous poemsincluding ‘Hanh khuc ngay va dem’ (The March of Day and Night), ‘Bongcay Konia’ (Shade Of The Konia Tree), ‘Thuyen va bien’ (Boat and sea),‘Nhung anh sao dem’ (Starlight at Night), ‘O hai dau noi nho’ (At TwoEnds of Nostalgia).


The late musician was also known for many children’s songs such as ‘Doiken ti hon’ (Tiny trumpet team) and ‘Nho on Bac’ (Be grateful to UncleHo).


He was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts inrecognition of his great contributions to the country’s music industry.
