Work began Monday on the construction of Vietnam’s first ever space science studio which authorities said was meant to raise public interest in science, especially among youths.

To be built at a cost of VND171.1 billion (US$7.84 million), the complex will cover an area of nearly 12,660 square meters in Binh Dinh Province to host a museum on different themes like physics and chemistry, a house featuring space displays, and a space observatory.

The studio will also consist of a café, a library and souvenir shops, when its construction completes in 2017.

About 93.5 percent of the projected cost reportedly came from the state budget.

Rencontres du Vietnam (Meetings of Vietnam), a union of overseas Vietnamese and foreign scientists, were in charge of the project’s scientific facts.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Ho Quoc Dung, chairman of Binh Dinh’s People Committee, said the space studio was part of their program to integrate tourism into science developments.
