VietNamNet Bridge – The HCM City People’s Court, which is 130 years old, will be restored at a cost of VND320 billion (nearly $16 million).
HCM City People’s Court is a unique structure in Vietnam, designed by French architect Bourard, supervised by French architect Foulhoux. It was built from 1881 to 1885. The building was originally built in the H-shape, with two floors and a basement. Each floor has a height of 5.2 m to receive the wind from the open space around.
After the unification of the country in 1975, the building was handed over to the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City. However, over the years it became the office of many state agencies as the HCMC People’s Court, the HCM City People’s Supreme Court, Ho Chi Minh City People’s Procuracy and the Appellate Institute of the People’s Supreme Procuracy. These agencies have handed over the entire building to the HCM City People’s Court.

The icon of justice is mounted on the wall.
Lady Justice Statue is placed either sides of the stairs in the main lobby. However, over the years the statue has been scratched in several places.
The court planned to restore the building in 2002 and four years later the plan was approved. In 2012, this work was recognized as a national monument. In the picture is the stone staircase, the major path to the second floor, which was paved with stone imported from Italy.
Part of the ceiling is damaged. Some sub-works that were newly built inside and outside the court will be demolished in order to ensure the restoration of the original structure.
The water pipes from the roof have been damaged.
Many windows have rotted.
The electrical and cable system resembles a cobweb on the ceiling.
Experts took samples and assessed the components and raw materials used in the construction of the building in order to find suitable materials for the restoration. |

The second path to the courtroom is on the second floor. The wooden stairs are still good for use. In fact, only a few steps and the top of the handrail are broken. The budget estimates for the restoration of the building is about VND320 billion ($16 million); the project will be implemented within two years, said an official of the court.
