The meaning of patterns on stone pillars in Tran Temple

VietNamNet Bridge – All pillars in the Tran Temple in Trang An tourist site in Ninh Binh are made from monolith green stone blocks, and each pillar represents an aspiration.

Tran Temple is located in the core area of Trang An, a world natural heritage site. It was built during the Dinh Dynasty, one of four temples in the ancient capital of Hoa Lu. The temple worships Quy Minh Dai Vuong, one of three brothers who were three generals under King Hung Vuong, the 18th. They were canonized including Quy Minh Dai Vuong, Son Thanh Tan Vuong and Cao Son Dai Vuong.   The temple consists of two adjacent buildings. The first is empty, without a door, but it has two rows of stone pillars. The first row includes four columns, made of monolith green stone. The columns are carved with delicate motifs and parallel sentences.    The second row of pillars is also made of monolith green stone. Two columns in the outermost are decorated with dragons and stylized themes and the two columns in the middle are carved with parallel sentences.   The dragons and motifs carved on the pillars.     Duong Dinh Thanh, the temple caretaker, said each of the 12 stone pillars represent a wish.   The first column on the right is for a good career and prosperous country. The second column is for fortune and good weather. The third is for good health and the fourth is for love of children.   In the second building are altars and statues of Quy Minh Dai Vuong and his wife – Princess Minh Hoa.
