Hip hop show at Saigon’s Lookout

Saigon’s Lookout will host a hip hop and electronic dance music show called Funky Fresh Friday every Friday night.

The event will include a performance of local DJ Phat Beatz who will present favourite hip hop tracks.

DJ and music producer Demon Slayer from California will rock the house with his electronic music. Slayer, who started his music career at the age of 16, recently performed at the Coachella Valley Music Festival.

British DJ to feature at The Observatory

Heart Beat, an event promoter and music label producing underground music in Sai Gon, will present a concert featuring house music at The Observatory on October 2.

The night will feature London-based music producer and DJ Marco Lenzi, who was voted 49th in the DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs in the world in 2008.

He will perform along with resident DJs, including Oko from Ukraine, Chris Wolter from Germany, and B. A. X. from Viet Nam.

The show will begin at 9pm at 5 Nguyen Tat Thanh Street in District 4. Entrance fee is free until 11pm, and VND150,000 afterwards.

Visit Open Studio to learn more about art

The Friends of Viet Nam Heritage will host a visit on Sunday to the Open Studio, operated by two expat artists living and painting in Ha Noi.

George and Ilza Burchett will host visitors at their studio/home, where visitors can view the art and talk with the artists about their works.

George Burchett, born in Ha Noi in 1955, is the son of legendary Australian journalist Wilfred Burchett. George Burchett studied art in Paris and graduated with a master’s degree in mural art from the Fine Arts Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Ilza Burchett studied painting and mural art at the Fine Arts Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria and graduated with a master’s degree in fine art in 1978. Since then, she has worked as an artist and has exhibited in Europe, Australia, South East Asia and China.

Full Moon Festival night promises fun

Madake Bar and Restaurant will host a Full Moon Festival programme on Saturday featuring traditional Vietnamese activities.

The event from 3pm to 11pm will include a workshop on painting paper mache masks and traditional lamps for the festival. From 6pm to 7pm, attendees can make a traditional craft by assembling pieces of grapefruit to resemble a puppy.

The main full moon ceremony with a traditional lion dance will be held from 7pm to 8pm, which will be followed by a traditional music performance and lion dance in the neighbourhood.

The entrance ticket costs VND80,000, which includes a surprise gift set. Madake is located at 81 Xuan Dieu Street, Tay Ho District.

Youth Union celebrates with a song

Eleven songs about the country and youth have been selected for the final round of the songwriting contest Toi Yeu To Quoc Toi (I Love Viet Nam – My Country), launched by the Viet Nam Youth Union to celebrate 59 years of its traditional day, which falls on October 15.

The songs were selected from 2,000 works written by professional and amateur musicians at home and abroad.

These songs will be recorded and introduced on Thanh Nien Online.

More than 300,000 karaoke DVDs featuring the songs will be distributed.

“The contest aims to encourage love of country among the Vietnamese. The contest attracted many young people at home and abroad, who shared their feelings through composition,” said musician and jury Le Quang Vu.

The final round and awards ceremony will be held at the HCM City’s Hoa Binh Theatre on October 14.
